Is there still a federal solar tax credit in 2026?

No — not for a system you buy and own. The 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit (IRC §25D) ended for solar, battery and geothermal systems installed after December 31, 2025, under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (Public Law 119-21, signed July 4, 2025). Leased and PPA systems are different: the installer that owns them can still claim the commercial §48E credit for systems placed in service by the end of 2027.

Why Green Energy Calculators

Straight answers.
No sales pitch.

Many solar calculators exist to collect your phone number for an installer. Ours don't ask for contact details, show every assumption, and were rebuilt for 2026 when the federal credit ended — including states where solar no longer pays off quickly.

  • Uses EIA electricity rate data and NREL sun hour data for every US state
  • Applies 2026 federal law (no §25D credit) and each state's net-metering rules
  • Results update instantly as you adjust any input — no page reloads
  • No lead forms, no signup — the site is funded by display ads, which never affect results
  • Methodology is transparent — every formula is documented

US solar & energy FAQ

Direct answers on savings, the federal tax credit, and our free calculators.

Not for homeowner-owned systems. The 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit (IRC §25D) ended for solar panels and batteries installed after December 31, 2025, under Public Law 119-21. Systems completed in 2025 are claimed on the 2025 return and unused credits can carry forward. Leased and PPA systems can still benefit indirectly because the owner may claim the commercial §48E credit through 2027.
